- Spoiler:
- The Visoreds are a group of rogue Soul Reapers who have illegally acquired hollow powers.
While the term Visored is spelled in the manga using kanji meaning masked army (仮面の軍勢, kamen no gunzei?), it is pronounced as the English visored (ヴァイザード, vaizādo?), an archaic meaning being "masked". Earlier English translations used "vizard", which instead means "mask".
Overview
The Visoreds are the antithesis to the arrancar: they are Soul Reapers who have obtained hollow powers. The associated process is referred to as "Hollowification" (虚化, horō-ka?).Having begun as Soul Reapers, the Visoreds appear entirely human, and barring those times when they are using their powers are indistinguishable from ordinary Soul Reapers. To gain access to their hollow powers, a Visored dons a hollow mask. This allows them to augment their Soul Reaper abilities with hollow powers, as well as giving them access to some of the generic hollow abilities. Their spiritual pressure likewise changes into a mix of hollow and Soul Reaper.
It is unclear what the motives of the Visoreds are. The members of the Visored group have been shown to be former high-level Soul Reapers, exclusively drawn from the captain and lieutenant ranks. Soul Society's Central 46 considers them to be de facto hollows, and ordered that they be exterminated; Visoreds are also not aligned with hollows. Thus, it can be presumed that the only side the Visoreds are on is their own. Regardless, they seem to be valuable allies-to-be in the battle against Sōsuke Aizen's army of arrancar, as Kisuke Urahara mentions. The Visoreds have not shown any sort of hierarchy, seeming to prefer a loose-knit organization.

Shinigami (soul reaper)
- Spoiler:
- Soul Reapers are a race of spirits who govern the flow of souls between the human world and the afterlife.
Soul Reapers are departed human souls that have gained supernatural powers. Their bodies are composed of ectoplasm which mimics normal human anatomy. Soul Reapers can only be seen by other spiritually aware entities, which excludes most humans, but otherwise are solid entities capable of influencing their environment. Additionally, they can be injured and die like regular humans, though it takes considerably greater injuries for the latter to occur than it would in regular humans.
All Soul Reapers possess a zanpakutō (斬魄刀, zanpakutō? literally "soul-cutting sword"), a physical manifestation of their soul that takes the form of a regular sword. By learning the name of the sword's spirit and learning to work with it in battle, Soul Reapers can unlock more powerful forms of their zanpakutō. The first form, known as shikai (始解, shikai? "initial release"), changes the swords appearance to better facilitate it special abilities. The second form, known as bankai (卍解, bankai? "final release"), can only normally be achieved when a Soul Reaper trains with their zanpakutō for decades. Once achieved the Soul Reaper can unlock their zanpakutō's full potential, increasing their power several times over.
Soul Reaper operations are based out of Soul Society, which is the afterlife in Bleach. Travel between the human world and Soul Society is extremely limited and monitored, but some Soul Reapers are stationed in the human world to carry out their duties and therefore must often travel between the two. In addition, it is a crime for a Soul Reaper to remain in the human world longer than directed. A Soul Reaper's duties include leading wholes (ghosts) to Soul Society in a practice called soul burial (konsō), and the cleansing of hollows (evil spirits).

Hollows
- Spoiler:
- Hollows are departed human souls that have not been sent to Soul Society in due time, leading to their corruption. Once corrupted, they gain a skull-like mask, a drastically different physical appearance, and a very animalistic level of intelligence. Hollows crave other human souls, living or dead, to fill their empty hearts and ease their pain, starting with the persons it loved the most in its past life.[1] They reside in Hueco Mundo when they're not scouring the human world for souls to consume. They will continue to search for and consume souls until they are slain by a Soul Reaper, at which point their souls are purified and they are allowed to pass on to Soul Society.
Some hollows have an unusually strong thirst for souls which leads them to consume other hollows. These hollows gather naturally, fighting to the death, and finally merging with one another, evolving into stronger and more intelligent forms known as menos (メノス, menosu?, Spanish for "minus" or "less"). Within the menos, there are three levels of evolution. The first of these is the gillian (最下大虚(ギリアン), girian?, Japanese for "least of the great hollows"), large and powerful but possessing very low intelligence and no individuality, the result of the merging of hundreds of hollows. In the rare case a gillian retains its consciousness, it can continue to consume other gillians and eventually evolve into an adjuchas (中級大虚(アジューカス), ajūkasu?, Japanese for "intermediate great hollow"), gaining a smaller body and superior strength, speed and intelligence, compared to their previous form. From there, some adjuchas have the potential to evolve into a vasto lorde (最上大虚(ヴァストローデ), vasuto rōde?, Japanese for "Great king of the Hollows"). Vasto lorde are more humanoid in size and appearance and possess battle strength comparable or superior to a Soul Reaper captain, to the point where captain Tōshirō Hitsugaya speculates that Soul Society would be doomed if Sōsuke Aizen managed to get ten vasto lorde under his command.

Quincy
- Spoiler:
- Quincy (クインシー, Kuinshī?) are a clan of humans who, over many centuries, became spiritually aware. In doing so they devised their own brand of spiritual powers; they can absorb spiritual energy and then manipulate for offensive purposes. They most commonly reshape spiritual particles into various types of bow and arrows, but can also concentrate spiritual energy into the form of swords or explosives. At their height, Quincies used their powers to combat the hollows, protecting the inhabitants of the human world with a success rate greater than that of the Soul Reapers. Unlike the Soul Reapers, who purify the souls of hollows, Quincy destroyed the hollow, soul and all. This created an imbalance between the worlds of the living and the dead, threatening to destroy the universe. To prevent this, the Soul Reapers almost exterminated the Quincy, leaving only two Quincy to survive into the current Bleach storyline and creating a great animosity between the two groups.
